How Is Intelligence Really Measured in Children?
A real intelligence assessment is not something done in five minutes over the phone. For a valid result, three conditions are needed:
- Expert: The test is administered one-on-one by a trained psychologist.
- Standard test: A scientifically developed scale, normed by age, is used.
- Suitable setting: It is done in a calm environment where the child feels comfortable and is not distracted.
So an IQ test is not an "exam"; it is an observation process that evaluates the child's skills in different areas, such as language, logic, visual-spatial thinking, and memory, separately.
Main Intelligence Tests Used in Turkey
ASİS (Anadolu-Sak Intelligence Scale)
ASİS is the first locally developed intelligence test, created through a collaboration between Anadolu University and the Ministry of National Education. It is administered one-on-one to children aged 4-12 and takes about 25-45 minutes. Its biggest advantage is that the questions are prepared according to Turkish culture and language, which makes it fairer for children in our country. ASİS is also used in the BİLSEM (Science and Art Centers) process.
WISC-R and WISC-4 (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children)
It is one of the most widely used children's intelligence tests in the world. It is administered one-on-one to children aged 6-16; it includes subtests made up of verbal and performance sections and takes about 60-70 minutes. It shows a detailed profile of the child's strengths and weaknesses in cognitive areas.

Are the "Free Children's IQ Tests" Online Valid?
In short: no. Click-and-answer tests online can be fun and may give you a general idea, but they do not measure a child's intelligence or diagnose anything. Be especially careful with paid sites that say, "Learn your child's IQ, get a certificate." An official and valid result can only be obtained by an expert using a standardized test. When and Why Is a Child's Intelligence Measured?
Not every child takes an IQ test as a routine step. It is usually requested when a specific need comes up:

- BİLSEM process: During the referral stage to Science and Art Centers.
- Learning difficulty: To understand the reason when unexpected problems arise at school.
- Referral: For educational decisions and support planning.
By age, ASİS can be used from age 4, and WISC from age 6. For official assessments, you can apply to Guidance and Research Centers (RAM).
How Should You Interpret the Result?
The most common mistake here is reducing a child to a single number. Keep these points in mind:
- Scores are less stable at a young age: Results can change as a child grows; an early test is not a "fixed destiny."
- Do not label: Statements like "You are a genius" or "You are not smart" can harm a child.
- Intelligence is not one-dimensional: Emotional intelligence, creativity, and social skills matter at least as much as the numerical score.
