A correct word earns 100 points per letter. A wrong answer or timeout costs the same amount.

Use “Reveal Letter” to uncover one hidden letter for 100 points.

Your final score is set when the 5-minute game timer ends.

How Word Puzzles Train Analytical Thinking

Word puzzles test more than vocabulary. You connect a definition with possible answers, rule out words of the wrong length and retrieve the best match under time pressure. That combination exercises language, memory and reasoning at once.

Skills You Can Use Every Day

Every clue asks you to compare possibilities and commit to the strongest answer. Regular practice can make word recall faster, improve attention to detail and help you approach everyday problems from more than one angle.

What Is This Online Crossword Puzzle?

This free online crossword puzzle turns the familiar clue-solving experience into a fast single-word challenge. There is no intersecting grid: you see a clue, the number of letters and a row of empty boxes. Without crossing letters to lean on, reading the clue precisely matters even more.

A game lasts 5 minutes, with 30 seconds per clue. A correct answer earns 100 points per letter; a wrong answer or timeout deducts the same amount. You can reveal one letter for 100 points, adding a useful risk-and-reward decision to every difficult word.

The real workout is not simply knowing more words. You need to retrieve the right word from its meaning while the clock is running. Repeated play can make those “tip of the tongue” moments shorter and less frequent.

How to Play

  • Read the clue and check how many letter boxes appear underneath it. Word length is one of your strongest filters.
  • Your 30-second answer timer begins as soon as the clue appears.
  • A correct answer earns word length × 100 points. A five-letter word is worth 500 points; an eight-letter word is worth 800.
  • A wrong answer or timeout deducts the same number of points, so longer words carry a larger risk.
  • Reveal Letter uncovers one box for a fixed cost of 100 points.
  • When the full 5 minutes end, your score is final.

Strategies That Raise Your Score

  • Make a reasonable guess instead of waiting. A timeout and a wrong answer have the same penalty. If you have a plausible answer, trying it gives you upside without an extra scoring risk.
  • Save letter hints for long words. A hint always costs 100 points. That is only 12.5% of an eight-letter answer's reward, but 25% of a four-letter answer's reward.
  • Treat word length as a hard rule. If the clue suggests “a book of maps” and there are five boxes, ATLAS fits; MAP does not. Eliminate every idea with the wrong length immediately.
  • Identify the clue style. It may be a direct definition, a description, an object's function or a general-knowledge fact. Knowing the style narrows the kind of answer you need.
  • Use the revealed position, not just the letter. A vowel at the end or a familiar prefix at the start can expose the structure of the whole word.
  • Protect the five-minute clock. Decide within 10–15 seconds whether you can solve unaided, need a letter or should make your best guess.

What Does the Game Train?

  • Word retrieval: recalling a familiar word quickly is a separate skill from recognising it when you see it.
  • Reading precision: small details in a clue can separate the right answer from a tempting alternative.
  • Spelling awareness: building an answer letter by letter reinforces its exact written form.
  • Risk assessment: every difficult clue asks you to compare the cost of a hint with the value of the word.
  • Focus under pressure: the timer rewards calm decisions and quick recovery after a mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions
