Frequently Asked Questions

Things People Ask

Answers to the questions we get most often about the IQ test.

An IQ test is a standardised instrument built to estimate a person's cognitive ability. It samples areas such as logic, memory and problem solving. You can take our free IQ test right now.
90-110 is average (roughly 52% of people). 111-120 is above average, 121-130 superior, and 131 and up is the gifted range. About 68% of the population falls inside the wider 85-115 band.
Playing regularly has a positive effect on memory, attention and problem solving. Have a look at our free brain games.
Our test is a general assessment aimed mainly at adults. Because children's cognitive development changes quickly with age, assessments for children are carried out by specialists using age-appropriate instruments. As a fun mental workout to share with your child, try our brain games instead.
In everyday use they mean the same thing, and that holds for the test on this page. Technically "intelligence test" is the broader heading — it covers every instrument measuring verbal, numerical, visual and attention abilities. "IQ" refers to the result of that measurement converted to a scale with a mean of 100. One is the method, the other is the scale of the output.
This test has 28 questions and takes about 15 minutes. They are not all one type: you will meet pattern completion, verbal reasoning, numerical relationships and visual-spatial rotation tasks. We explain what each question type measures on our methodology page.
Yes, as often as you like. Bear in mind that retaking it quickly inflates your score, because you remember the questions. For a more realistic result, leave a gap between attempts and pick a day when you are rested — poor sleep costs measurable points.
No. It is for general information and personal curiosity, and does not replace a professional assessment. Clinical tests are administered one-to-one by a specialist, rest on age-specific norm tables, and produce a profile rather than a single number. For decisions about health, education or development, speak to a qualified professional.
It was built with established principles of intelligence assessment in mind. It focuses on logical reasoning and pattern recognition, and weighs both your accuracy and your response speed.
It has 28 steps and takes about 15 minutes on average. Your score is calculated from both accuracy and answer time.
Not exactly. Intelligence is a broad capacity covering learning, reasoning, problem solving and adaptation. IQ is a number reflecting the particular parts of that capacity a test can measure. Creativity, emotional intelligence and practical skill sit outside these tests.
IQ is a largely stable trait, but the brain keeps developing through learning and regular mental exercise. Puzzles, picking up new skills, good sleep and consistent physical activity all support cognitive performance. Training these habits matters far more than the number on any test.
The 85-115 band is considered normal and holds roughly two thirds of the population. Under a narrower definition, 90-109 is called "average". "Normal" here is not a judgement of quality — it is a statement of statistical position, meaning close to the centre of the distribution.
It is completely free. There is no payment screen to see your result, we do not ask for an email address, and you do not need to create an account. Your score appears on screen the moment you finish.
We do not ask for identifying information. If you choose to join the leaderboard, only the nickname you type and your score are shown. If you would rather not, you can simply view your result and leave. The details are in our privacy policy.

Reading Your Result

How Should You Read Your IQ Test Result?

The number an intelligence test produces does not report the amount of intelligence you have. It reports your position within your own age group. The scale is built so that the average is 100. Scoring 100 means "you are in the middle" — not a shortcoming and not an achievement, just a reference point.

No IQ score is an exact value. In professional assessments the result is not given as a single number but with a confidence interval: something like "108, 95% confidence interval 102-114". That is because measurement error is built into the process. In practice: the gap between 104 and 111 may not be a real gap at all.

The same person taking the same test on a different day can get a different number. The factors behind that are ordinary and well known.

  • Sleep. A single bad night produces a measurable drop.
  • Anxiety. Worry occupies the mental room a question needs.
  • Familiarity with the format. Meeting this kind of question for the first time slows you down.
  • Distractions. A test taken with divided attention does not reflect real performance.

There are things the score does not say. IQ tests ask questions with a single correct answer. Creativity, social skill, domain knowledge, persistence and curiosity fall entirely outside the scale. A high IQ makes some tasks easier, but it does not determine what you will do or where you will end up.

The healthiest reading is this: treat the result as an observation, not a verdict. Noticing which sections felt comfortable and where you struggled tells you far more than the number itself. We cover what the score ranges mean on our blog, and how the test is scored on the methodology page.

What Does an IQ Score Mean?

An IQ score of 90-110 is classed as average intelligence, 121-130 as superior, and 131 and above as gifted. Around 68% of the population sits in the broad average band. People scoring 130 and over are generally considered gifted. A high score says less about how "clever" someone is than about which areas they are strong in. Take the test now and find out where you stand.
