When you hear in a movie or on the news that someone is a "Mensa member," you probably think, "so they must be very smart." That is a fair impression, but what Mensa actually is and how people really get in often stays vague. In this article, I explain both the story of the community and the practical ways to join from Turkey.
What is Mensa, really?
Mensa was founded in 1946 in Oxford, England. Its founders were Roland Berrill, a lawyer, and Lancelot Ware, a scientist. Their goal was simple: to create an egalitarian community united only by high intelligence, regardless of background, profession, or age. The fact that the name means "table" in Latin reflects this idea; it stands for a round table where everyone sits as equals.
Today it is an international organization with hundreds of thousands of members around the world. It has one rule, and that rule is the same for everyone.
The only requirement: the top 2% of the population
The sole criterion for Mensa membership is to score in the top 2% of the general population on an approved intelligence test. In practice, that usually corresponds to an IQ score of about 132 or higher on most scales. A diploma, profession, age, or title plays no role; only this threshold matters.
One key detail here: fun tests you see online that promise to "find out your IQ in 5 minutes" do not count for Mensa. Accepted results must come from tests administered under supervision by authorized people or institutions.
Three ways to join from Turkey
When you apply to Mensa Turkey, there are three different paths depending on your situation:
- A valid test you have already taken: If you passed the required threshold on a test administered by an authorized psychologist, pedagogue, or Guidance and Research Center (RAM), you can apply by submitting your documents.
- BILSEM and TEVİTÖL background: BILSEM students and graduates, as well as TEVİTÖL graduates before 2017, can qualify for direct membership by presenting the required documents.
- Mensa's own test: If you do not have a valid result, you take Mensa's test. The process usually starts with an online preliminary test, followed by the main test under supervision. This session typically lasts two to three hours.
How does the application work in practice?
Applications are made through the official Mensa Turkey website, mensa.org.tr. First, you choose the option that fits your situation, then you read and approve the KVKK disclosure text. If you are going through the test route, the result of the preliminary test leads to an invitation to the supervised session; if you are applying with an existing document, the review is based on the paperwork.
Once you pass the threshold, you gain access to events where you can meet people with similar interests, online groups, and the international Mensa network. So the point is not a badge; it is sitting at the same table with people who think like you.
