IQ is often treated as if one number could summarize an entire mind. In psychological assessment, the score matters, but so do the test used, the normative sample, the conditions of administration and the reason the assessment was requested. A child's educational needs, an adult's clinical cognitive profile and a recreational online quiz are three very different contexts. This guide brings together the basic science of IQ testing with practical questions that are commonly asked in Turkey. What is IQ?
IQ stands for “intelligence quotient”. In modern psychological testing it is usually a standard score showing how a person performed on a set of cognitive tasks compared with people of the same age. The old formula based on mental age divided by chronological age is part of the history of testing, but it is not how most modern intelligence scales are scored.
On widely used scales the mean is set at 100, often with a standard deviation of 15. Roughly two thirds of scores therefore fall between 85 and 115. A score of 100 is not “100 percent”; it means performance close to the average of the relevant norm group.
What is a normal IQ score?
For a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, about two thirds of people score between 85 and 115, while more than 95 percent fall roughly between 70 and 130. These ranges are descriptive, not diagnoses on their own.
An IQ of 110 also does not mean someone is “10 percent more intelligent” than a person who scores 100. IQ is a standardized score, not a percentage.
What kinds of questions are in an IQ test?
There is no single type of IQ question. Comprehensive batteries may include tasks involving verbal comprehension, reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory and processing speed. A person might be asked to identify a pattern, explain a relationship between concepts, hold information in mind and manipulate it, or work accurately with symbols under time limits.
A short online quiz made only of number sequences or visual matrices should not be treated as a complete measurement of human intelligence. WAIS-5, for example, provides information across several cognitive domains including visual-spatial ability, fluid and quantitative reasoning, working memory and processing speed.
How is a genuine IQ assessment carried out?
A professional assessment begins by choosing a test suited to the person's age and the reason for referral. It is then administered according to standardized instructions under controlled conditions. Raw scores are converted using age-based norms, and interpretation considers both the overall score and the pattern across subtests.
Getting 24 questions right out of 30 does not, by itself, equal an IQ of 120. That conversion can only be made within a test that has a defined scoring system and an appropriate normative sample.
Who administers an IQ test?
Standardized intelligence tests used for clinical or educational decisions should be administered by professionals who are qualified to use the specific instrument. Correct interpretation matters as much as correct administration.
In Turkey, some public hospitals publish information showing that intelligence tests are administered within psychology services. Eyüpsultan State Hospital, for example, lists several intelligence tests as part of its psychology laboratory services.
Where should you go for the most reliable IQ assessment?
The name of the building matters less than the test, the norms and the examiner's qualifications. For a clinical question, an appropriate hospital psychology/psychiatry service or a qualified assessment professional is usually the right route. Educational assessment for children may involve Turkey's Guidance and Research Centres (RAM).
Before booking, it is reasonable to ask which instrument is used, whether it is appropriate for the person's age, whether suitable local norms are available, and what the resulting report can legitimately be used for.
Which IQ test is best?
There is no single best test for everyone. Age, language, purpose and individual circumstances affect test selection. The Wechsler family and Stanford–Binet are among the best-known standardized intelligence measures.
Pearson lists WAIS-5 for ages 16:0 to 90:11 and WISC-V for children aged 6:0 to 16:11. A newer international edition is not automatically the best choice in every country; translation, adaptation and local standardization matter.
How can I find out my IQ?
If you are simply curious, a well-designed online test can give you a rough sense of how you perform on certain reasoning tasks. It does not carry the same weight as a standardized assessment administered under controlled conditions.
If the result will be used for school placement, special education, a clinical evaluation or another formal purpose, use a professional standardized assessment. An online score is better viewed as an estimate for that particular test rather than a definitive personal IQ.
Can I take an IQ test for free?
Free IQ tests are widely available online and commonly use pattern recognition, logic, attention, numerical relationships and visual problem-solving tasks. Free does not automatically mean poor quality, but clinical validity is a separate question.
Useful details include whether the test explains its normative sample, uses age-specific norms, and describes its scoring and timing. If none of that information is available, the score deserves a cautious interpretation.
How much does an IQ test cost in Turkey?
There is no single national price for an IQ assessment in Turkey. Fees vary with the institution, the instrument used, interview time, written reporting and any additional assessment. In public services, access also depends on clinical need and local procedures.
Prices quoted online should not be presented as a universal “IQ test price”. Psychotechnical assessments for drivers are also a different service and should not be confused with a standard intelligence assessment.
Do Turkish public hospitals offer IQ tests?
Some Turkish public hospitals do offer intelligence testing through psychiatry or psychology services, but availability is not identical everywhere and testing is often part of a clinical assessment rather than a walk-in service for curiosity alone.
Eyüpsultan State Hospital, which is part of the Ministry of Health system, publicly lists intelligence tests in its psychology laboratory. For current access rules, the relevant hospital department should be contacted directly.
Where can IQ testing be done in Turkey?
For adults, clinical assessment may be available through hospital psychiatry/psychology services or qualified professionals in assessment centres. For children, medical assessment and educational assessment are separate processes. Turkish Ministry of Education material distinguishes medical assessment in health institutions from educational assessment and identification carried out by Guidance and Research Centres.
The right route depends on why the test is needed. Curiosity, a clinical question and an official educational assessment are not interchangeable purposes.
Can an IQ test be done in a hospital?
Yes, when clinically indicated. In a hospital the aim is usually to support an assessment, not simply to provide a recreational IQ number. The department decides whether testing is needed and which instrument is appropriate.
Because procedures vary by hospital, it is sensible to ask the psychiatry or child and adolescent mental health service whether intelligence testing is available and whether a physician's referral is required.
Is an IQ test required for a driving licence in Turkey?
No. Turkey does not routinely require every driving-licence applicant to take an IQ test. The Ministry of Health has explicitly stated that intelligence testing is not applied to all applicants. If a medical examination raises a relevant concern and the person is referred for psychiatric evaluation, a psychiatrist may request an intelligence test when considered necessary.
So the claim that “everyone must pass an IQ test to get a driving licence” is incorrect.
Are intelligence and IQ the same thing?
No. Intelligence is a broad concept involving learning, reasoning, problem solving, adaptation and the use of knowledge. IQ is a standardized numerical description of performance on particular cognitive tasks relative to a norm group.
An intelligence test does not reduce creativity, curiosity, motivation, personality, social skill, life experience or a person's value to a single number. IQ is one measurement within a much wider picture.
What is the average IQ in Turkey?
Online lists give very different figures for Turkey, but many are not based on the same sampling method or on a nationally representative assessment. The average of volunteers who take an online test cannot automatically be treated as the average of the Turkish population.
Without a current, methodologically strong, nationally representative study, it is safer not to claim that “Turkey's average IQ is exactly X”. Cross-country comparisons are highly sensitive to sampling, education, language, test adaptation and socioeconomic conditions.
What should a person's IQ be?
“Should be” is not quite the right framing because IQ is not a target grade. On common scales the population mean is around 100 and most people fall between 85 and 115. A single score is not enough to judge everyday functioning, academic achievement or occupational potential.
Professional reports also take measurement error and confidence intervals into account rather than treating a score as perfectly exact.
Is being smart the same as being intelligent?
Everyday language often blurs the two ideas. “Intelligent” usually points toward the capacity to learn, reason and solve problems; “smart” can also imply using one's abilities well in real situations.
High cognitive ability does not guarantee good judgement. Experience, self-control, planning, motivation and social reasoning can be just as important in day-to-day decisions.
What was Albert Einstein's IQ?
A figure of 160 is often attached to Einstein online, but there is no reliable public record of a standardized IQ test that produced that score. It should not be presented as a measured fact.
Einstein's achievements clearly demonstrate extraordinary ability in his field, but they cannot be converted backwards into an exact IQ number. The careful statement is that no verified test score is known.
What an IQ score can — and cannot — tell you
The most useful way to read an IQ score is as one piece of information about cognitive performance, not as a summary of a person's mind. A careful assessment considers the overall score, the pattern across cognitive domains, age, testing conditions and the question that led to the assessment. Online tests can be enjoyable and informative when used for curiosity. Educational or clinical decisions require standardized assessment and qualified interpretation. Creativity, effort, character, social ability and future achievement do not fit into a single IQ number.
