What Is a Memory Test?

The test on this page is the classic short-term memory measure known in psychology as digit span: a number appears on screen, you memorize it, and once it hides you type what you remember. Every correct round adds a digit and the test ends on the first mistake; your score is the digit count of the longest number you recalled correctly. The same task appears as a subtest in standardized batteries such as WAIS and WISC — administered there aloud by a professional, while this version is a visual, self-administered practical exercise.

The average adult holds 7±2 digits; psychologist George Miller's famous 1956 paper named this limit "the magical number seven". What stretches the limit is chunking: someone who reads "4-8-2-9-4-1" as "48-29-41" stores three items instead of six and reaches far longer numbers with the same memory. Ten digits and above is a rare performance for untrained people.

How It Works

  • Press "Start test" and a 3-digit number appears with a time bar running below it.
  • The number stays on screen according to its length: short numbers about 2 seconds, long ones up to 6 seconds.
  • When the bar runs out the number hides and the input box opens. Type what you remember — there is no time pressure while typing.
  • Press Enter or "Confirm". If you are right, you get a brief confirmation and move to a number one digit longer.
  • A single digit that is wrong, missing or swapped ends the round — order matters as much as the digits themselves.
  • When the test ends, the correct number and your answer are shown side by side so you can see exactly where you slipped.
  • Your score is the digit count of the longest number you recalled correctly; enter a nickname and it joins the leaderboard.
  • Pick "Visual Memory" at the start to memorize flashing tiles on a grid instead of a number: mark them all and the board grows by one tile. You have 3 lives; a wrong tile costs one and the level restarts.

Techniques That Stretch Your Memory

  • Chunk. Split the digits into groups of 2-3: "729-34-81" instead of "7-2-9-3-4-8-1". Memory is limited by items, not digits — chunking lowers the item count.
  • Say it in your head. Repeat the number with a rhythm, like reading a phone number. The auditory loop is more durable than the visual trace.
  • Attach meaning. Chunks like "1907", "42" or "112" are already in your memory as dates, jokes or emergency numbers. Familiar chunks store as a single item.
  • Trust the ends. The first and last digits are remembered best (primacy and recency); give the middle extra attention.
  • Scan deliberately. Read the number left to right on purpose during display; a wandering gaze leaves the middle digits never encoded.
  • Do several attempts in one sitting. The first try is almost always the worst; read your real level after a 3-4 attempt warm-up.
  • Do not measure sleep-deprived. Short-term memory is highly sensitive to sleep loss; a tired measurement runs 1-2 digits low.
  • Repeat regularly. Raw span grows slowly, but the chunking skill settles fast — a few days of practice makes a visible difference.

How many digits does the average person hold?

The average adult's digit span is 7±2, so anything from 5 to 9 is normal. Ten digits and above is rare among untrained people.

What counts as a good score?

8 digits is above average, 9-10 is very good, 11 and above is exceptional. Someone who settles into chunking can add 2-3 digits within weeks.

Is this a real psychological test?

Your score is the tile count of the last correct board; the average player stops at 10-11 tiles, and the two modes have separate leaderboards.

Does order matter, or just the digits?

Order matters as much as the digits: typing "824" for "482" is wrong. The test scores exactly like the classic forward digit span.

Why does the number show so briefly?

Display time grows with length (about 2 seconds for 3 digits, up to 6 seconds for long numbers). The aim is to measure retention, not reading speed; the rule is the same for everyone.

Does age affect memory?

Digit span peaks in the twenties and narrows slowly with age, but regular mental activity closes much of the gap. Strategies work equally well at every age.
