What Is a Reaction Time Test?

Reaction time is the interval between a stimulus appearing and your first motor response to it, measured in milliseconds (ms). This page runs the most widely used form, the simple visual reaction test: you wait on a red screen, it turns green at a random moment, and you click as fast as you can. The gap between the green appearing and your click is your reaction time for that try. Because a single try is open to luck, the test averages 3, 5 or 10 tries — the average is a far more reliable summary of your reflex speed.

The average human response to a visual stimulus falls between roughly 250 and 300 ms; the median of millions of online measurements comes out near 273 ms. The signal is first converted to electricity in the retina, processed in the visual cortex, the decision travels to the motor cortex and the muscle contracts — even the fastest humans rarely get this whole chain under 150 ms. Averages below 200 ms are professional e-sports territory. Keep in mind that your display and mouse can add 20-50 ms of lag; account for that when comparing results across devices.

How It Works

  • Choose the number of tries at the start: 3 gives a quick impression, 5 is the standard, 10 minimises luck. Each try count competes on its own leaderboard tab.
  • After pressing "Start test", click the area once; the screen turns red and the wait begins.
  • The colour change comes at a random moment between 1.2 and 3.2 seconds — there is no fixed rhythm, so you cannot count it out.
  • Click, or press Space, the moment the screen turns green. Your time is recorded in milliseconds and shown in the area.
  • Clicking while the screen is red does not count: a "Too early!" warning appears and the same try restarts. Presses under 80 ms count as anticipation and are invalid too.
  • The top bar shows your last try, your best try and your running average; the dots below the area show which try you are on.
  • When all tries are done, the result screen shows your average alongside your best and slowest tries and a short verdict.
  • Your score is the average of your tries and lower is better. Enter a nickname and your average joins the leaderboard; later sets only update it when they are better.

Tips for a Better Result

  • Keep the cursor still. Resting the mouse in the middle of the area removes the time you would spend moving it before the click. On a laptop, an external mouse beats the trackpad by a measurable margin.
  • Watch the colour, not the text. Your eyes catch a colour change far faster than they read words. Look blankly at the centre of the area and wait only for the red to go.
  • Do a few warm-up sets. The first set's average is almost always the slowest; the nervous system needs a few repeats to settle into the task. Read your real level from the second or third set.
  • Do not try to keep rhythm. The waiting time is deliberately random; counting it out ends in an early click and a lost try. The test rewards reaction, not prediction.
  • Do not measure while tired. Sleep deprivation lengthens reaction time markedly — research compares 24 hours without sleep to performing at the legal alcohol limit. Test with a fresh head.
  • Mind your caffeine timing. A moderate dose can shave a few milliseconds off; too much adds jitter and early clicks. Balance matters.
  • Compare on the same device. A 60 Hz and a 144 Hz display can differ by 10-15 ms from refresh rate alone. Track your progress on the same device and browser.
  • Repeat regularly. Simple reaction time improves with practice, if modestly; the real gain is consistency — a good player's tries stay within 30-40 ms of each other.
