What Is Archer Army?

Archer Army is a free archer game where you start with a single bowman, grow a whole army along the road and stop the red horde pouring out of the castle. Unlike classic archery games, you never aim shot by shot: your archers fire on their own and your job is to move the formation. Drag left or right and every archer slides with you while the camera follows your army. It runs in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop, with no download and no sign-up.

There is a lane on each side of the road, and the whole strategy plays out between them. Blue plates flowing down the right lane add +1, +2 or +3 archers when you break them, up to 48 archers; picking Army Capacity on the reward screen at the end of stages 1 and 2 raises that limit by 10 each time. Plates in the left lane give energy or a 10-second power-up instead: double fire rate or double damage, and now and then a rare triple, fourfold or fivefold plate. Green reinforcement plates send 3, 5 or 7 golden archers with every arrow power at maximum level for 15 seconds. Elemental creatures also march in among the enemy soldiers: the Frost Giant, Stone Golem, Forest Giant, Crystal Golem, Fire Spirit and Storm Spirit. Shoot one down before it reaches your army and your arrows get stronger; every upgrade goes up to level 5, or to 7 and then 9 if you pick Power-up on the stage-end reward screens. A lane only comes into view when you move your army towards it, so deciding when to recruit, when to power up and when to defend the middle is the heart of the game.

The battle has three stages of eight waves each, 24 waves in total, and every wave is bigger than the last. In each stage a Giant Orc storms out of the castle gate at the end of wave 4 (in later stages the giants come in greater numbers, bigger and stronger) and a dragon stalks out of it in wave 8. Beat the dragon and you move on to the next stage with your army and upgrades; the enemy army is more than twice as large in stage 2 and three times as large in stage 3, marching in tight blocks of tougher soldiers. Three energy skills help in tight moments: Arrow Rain, Flame Wall and Knight Squad. Defeat the dragon of stage 3 to take the castle; lose every archer and the battle is over. That makes Archer Army both a fast-paced army game and a small strategy game that asks for a new decision every second.

How to Play

  • When the game starts, your army sets off with a single archer. Archers fire automatically and nonstop; there is no fire button.
  • Drag left or right to move the whole army. On desktop, drag with the mouse or use the Left/Right arrow keys (A and D work too). The camera follows your army, and a side lane only comes into view when you move towards it.
  • Blue plates in the right lane show +1, +2 or +3. Break one with your arrows and that many new archers run in to join you. In wave 1 the first enemy leaves the castle only after 8 seconds, so use that time to recruit. After a few waves, yellow plates worth +5, +8 or +10 and steel barrier walls with their health written on them also appear; a wall takes a while to break but grants more than 10 archers at once.
  • Plates in the left lane give power-ups when you break them: lightning plates give energy, orange plates double your fire rate for 10 seconds, red plates double your damage and green reinforcement plates add 3, 5 or 7 full-power golden archers for 15 seconds. Rare gold-framed plates give triple power and purple plates fivefold.
  • Elemental creatures now and then come down the road with the enemy soldiers. The tag above each one shows which upgrade it carries and at which level. Shoot the creature down and that upgrade goes up one level; if it reaches your front line it stops there and attacks your archers.
  • The Frost Giant grants Frost Arrow, which slows the enemies you hit. The Stone Golem grants Power Arrow, which raises the damage of every arrow. The Forest Giant grants Multi Arrow, adding one arrow per archer. The Crystal Golem grants Piercing Arrow, letting arrows pass through enemies. The Fire Spirit grants Fireball, which hurls a fireball at the densest enemy group every few seconds. The Storm Spirit grants Rapid Fire, making your archers shoot more often.
  • Red soldiers march out of the castle gate and walk straight down the road, each keeping to its own path; they do not chase you. Those that line up with your army fight your front-line archers and, until they are killed, take an archer about every second; the bigger elite soldiers from wave 3 strike faster. Those that are not in line with you walk past and escape through the gate behind you; each soldier that escapes costs you one archer, each elite soldier two. That is why you should not leave the centre road empty for long.
  • The energy bar at the bottom left has 10 segments and does not refill on its own: the lightning MAX plate in the left lane fills it completely, and beating the Giant Orc or the dragon gives +3. Arrow Rain costs 4, Flame Wall 5 and Knight Squad 5. Arrow Rain targets the densest enemy group automatically, or the dragon once it is on the field. Flame Wall sends a line of fire rolling from your army towards the enemy, burning everyone it passes. Knight Squad is a band of knights, 20 in stage 1, 30 in stage 2 and 40 in stage 3, who come running from behind your army, charge into the enemy, draw the enemy soldiers onto themselves and fight until they fall. Keys 1, 2 and 3 also work.
  • There are 3 stages and 24 waves in total. In each stage the Giant Orc arrives at the end of wave 4 and the dragon in wave 8; stage 2 sends two giants at once and stage 3 three, and every other wave from 2 to 7 also ends with a giant (two in the later waves of stages 2 and 3). The boss health bar sits at the top of the screen. Defeat the stage 3 dragon to take the castle; lose every archer and the game ends. The button at the top right, or Esc/P, pauses the game.

Winning Strategies

  • Use the opening seconds. Slide into the right lane at once and break as many blue plates as you can before wave 1 arrives. An army that starts with one archer lives or dies by how many it has when the first wave hits.
  • Don't let creatures reach your front line. They come among the enemy soldiers and attack your archers once they arrive. When a tag appears, line your army up with it so every arrow rains on it.
  • Multi Arrow scales best. Every level adds an arrow to every archer, so with a big army hunting the Forest Giant is worth more than a blue plate.
  • Alternate lanes. Recruit on the right, grab power-up plates on the left and return to the centre when enemies bunch up. Fire rate and damage power-ups last 10 seconds, so time them just before a big wave.
  • Never sit on full energy. Energy stops at 10, so an energy plate broken on a full bar is wasted. Spend the cheap Arrow Rain freely and save Flame Wall and Knight Squad for the crowded moments.
  • Call Knight Squad at the right moment. When you head to a lane for archers or power-ups, the centre road is left empty; call the knights then and they draw the enemy onto themselves and cut down the number that escape. When the Giant Orc reaches your front line, each blow costs two archers; the knights strike the Orc as well.
  • Dodge dragon fire. When the dragon breathes, a red target ring appears on the ground and the fireball lands there about a second and a half later; slide sideways as soon as you see the ring. If the fight drags on, the dragon becomes enraged, fires more often and the plates stop coming.
  • Guard the middle. Enemy soldiers do not chase you; every soldier that is not in line with your army walks past, escapes through the gate and costs you an archer, and elite soldiers cost two. Don't leave the centre road empty for long while you visit the lanes; stay in the middle when a crowd is coming.

What Does It Train?

  • Quick decisions: recruit, power up or defend? The game asks again every few seconds.
  • Divided attention: two lanes, the centre road and the energy bar, all at once.
  • Resource management: sharing limited energy between three skills teaches you to weigh what to spend and when.
  • Planning ahead: choosing which upgrade to grow first and preparing for the boss waves rewards thinking several steps ahead.
  • Hand-eye coordination: lining the army up with plates and creatures and dodging dragon fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Archer Army free?

Yes. It is completely free and needs no account. It runs in your browser on phone, tablet and desktop, with nothing to download or install.

How do I grow my army?

Break the blue plates in the right lane. Each one gives as many archers as its number shows (+1, +2 or +3); in later waves yellow plates give +5 to +10 and steel barrier walls more than 10 archers at once. Plates get tougher as your army grows; the army tops out at 48 archers, or at 58 and then 68 if you pick Army Capacity on the stage-end reward screens, and plates you break after that give energy and points instead.

What are the elemental creatures for?

Each elemental creature carries an arrow upgrade: the Frost Giant gives Frost Arrow, the Stone Golem Power Arrow, the Forest Giant Multi Arrow, the Crystal Golem Piercing Arrow, the Fire Spirit Fireball and the Storm Spirit Rapid Fire. They come down the road with the enemy soldiers; shoot one down before it reaches your front line and that upgrade goes up a level, up to level 5; picking Power-up on a stage-end reward screen raises that cap to 7, and a second pick to 9. Once every upgrade is maxed, creatures give energy instead.

What do the plates on the left give?

Plates in the left lane give energy or a 10-second power-up when you break them: double fire rate or double damage. Green reinforcement plates send 3, 5 or 7 golden archers with maxed-out arrow powers for 15 seconds. Rare gold-framed plates give triple power and purple plates fivefold.

How do energy and skills work?

The energy bar holds 10 segments, does not refill on its own: the lightning MAX plate in the left lane fills it completely, and the Giant Orc and the dragon give +3. Arrow Rain costs 4, Flame Wall 5 and Knight Squad 5. Arrow Rain aims at the densest group automatically, Flame Wall rolls forward and burns the enemies in its path, and Knight Squad charges into the enemy with knights who come from behind your army and fight until they fall: 20 in stage 1, 30 in stage 2 and 40 in stage 3. Keys 1, 2 and 3 also work.

How many waves are there, and when do the bosses come?

There are 3 stages of 8 waves each, 24 waves in total. In each stage the Giant Orc appears at the end of wave 4 and the dragon in wave 8; in later stages the giants grow in number, size and strength. Beating a dragon takes you to the next stage; defeat the stage 3 dragon to win; if every archer falls, the game ends in that wave. Enemies and bosses get tougher as your army gets stronger.

How is the score calculated?

Red soldiers give 10 points, elite soldiers 30, the Giant Orc 500 and the dragon 2,000. Blue plates give 5 points per archer on the plate, and each creature you shoot down gives 40 points plus 10 times the level it grants. Each cleared wave adds 100 times its number, and victory adds 800 plus 25 for every surviving archer.

Is my record saved?

Yes. Your best score stays in your browser, and your score is sent to the leaderboard automatically when the game ends, when you exit or when you close the page.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. The Left/Right arrow keys or A/D move the army, 1, 2 and 3 trigger the skills and Esc or P pauses. Dragging with the mouse works too.
