What Is the Line Puzzle?

The Line Puzzle is a planning game in which you connect numbered checkpoints in order and cover every cell with one continuous path. The line cannot cross itself, no cell may be used twice, and the final number must be the last cell you enter. Those simple rules make every turn matter: one careless move can isolate a corner or split the remaining space into two unreachable areas.

Difficulty grows in two ways. Boards expand from 5×5 to 8×8, while the number and position of checkpoints also change. Every puzzle is generated from a valid complete route, so it has a solution even when the correct path is not obvious.

How to Play

  • Start at the cell marked 1. The line always extends from its current endpoint.
  • Move up, down, left or right. Diagonal moves are not allowed.
  • Visit numbered cells in ascending order; you cannot skip the next checkpoint.
  • Cover every cell exactly once and finish on the highest number.
  • Use Undo for a small correction, Reset for the whole route, or a hint when you reach a dead end.

Strategies That Work

  • Plan corners early. They have only two exits and are easy to trap.
  • Do not divide the empty board into separate regions. One continuous line cannot return to a sealed area.
  • Clear narrow corridors before open areas; they offer fewer route choices.
  • Look one checkpoint ahead. Think about the direction from which you need to reach the following number.
  • Avoid leaving a single empty cell surrounded by your path.
  • Undo a few moves as soon as you spot a dead end instead of resetting the entire board.

What Does It Train?

  • Planning: you learn to judge how a move changes the space available several steps later.
  • Spatial reasoning: the puzzle encourages you to see connected regions rather than isolated squares.
  • Concentration: you track the checkpoint order, empty cells and the line endpoint at the same time.
  • Problem solving: dead ends reward systematic backtracking and trying a different route.
  • Patience: larger boards make careful correction more useful than random tapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Line Puzzle free?

Yes. You can play every level for free in your browser, with no account or download.

Does every board have a solution?

Yes. Each board is built from a complete valid path first, then its numbered checkpoints are placed along that path.

How does the game become harder?

The board grows from 5×5 to 8×8 while the number of checkpoints rises. Randomised layouts keep repeated levels fresh.

Can I move diagonally?

No. The line moves only up, down, left or right through neighbouring cells.

Why can I not enter the last number?

The final number is also the finish cell. You can enter it only after every other cell has been filled.

What does a hint do?

It checks whether your current route can still be completed. It shows a possible continuation or marks the section you need to undo.

Can I continue from my last level?

Yes. Completed levels and your total score are saved in your browser. You can also choose Start over at any time.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Drag the line with your finger or tap cells one at a time; the board adapts to smaller screens.
