What Is Block Puzzle?

Block Puzzle is a free brain game where you place pieces of different shapes on an 8×8 board and score points by clearing the lines you fill. Each round three pieces arrive in the tray, and once all three are on the board, new ones come in. When a row or column is filled from end to end it disappears and frees up space. Pieces do not turn on their own, so the real decision is which piece goes where, and in what order. The game opens in your browser with no download or sign-up and is easy to play one-handed on a phone.

There is no time limit. The game ends when none of the pieces in the tray fits on the board. That makes Block Puzzle more about planning than speed: keeping the middle of the board open, saving room for long pieces and thinking about all three pieces together. Clear several lines in one move for a combo, clear on consecutive moves for a streak; both multiply your score.

There is endless progression too. Every line you clear fills the level bar. Each level gives you a Rotate charge, and every third level adds a Refresh charge. As your level rises, big pieces such as the 3×3 square, the five-block bar and the large L show up more often, so the game slowly gets harder. A game you leave halfway is saved in your browser, and you can continue where you left off when you come back.

How to Play Block Puzzle

  • When the game starts you see an empty board with a tray of three pieces below it. Grab a piece with your finger or the mouse and drag it onto the board. On a phone the piece floats a little above your finger, so you can see where you are putting it.
  • As you move the piece over the board, a gold outline shows where it will land. If that spot completes a row or column, the line about to clear lights up too. Lift your finger and the piece snaps into place; drop it where it does not fit and it simply goes back to the tray with no penalty.
  • A row or column that fills up completely clears and its squares become empty. A row and a column can fill at the same time; each counts as a separate line.
  • Once all three pieces in the tray are placed, three new pieces arrive. You decide the order in which to place them.
  • Pieces that have no room anywhere on the board look faded in the tray. If no piece fits and you have no powers left, the game is over.
  • Press Rotate and tap a piece to turn it 90 degrees. One charge lets you turn that piece as often as you like until you place it. Refresh swaps the pieces in the tray for three new ones and asks for two taps so you do not spend it by accident.
  • On a computer you can also use the keyboard: 1, 2 and 3 pick a piece, the arrow keys move it, Enter places it, R rotates, Y refreshes and P pauses.

How Are Points, Combos and Streaks Scored?

Every square you place is worth 1 point. The real points come from clearing lines, and the more lines you clear in a single move, the faster the score grows:

In one move1 line2 lines3 lines4 lines
Points1003006001,000

Clearing four lines in one move earns two and a half times as much as clearing a single line four times. Each clear on a consecutive move adds one to your streak and multiplies the line points: ×1.5 on the second clear, ×2 on the third, ×2.5 on the fourth, up to a maximum of ×4. Placing a piece without clearing anything resets the streak. Empty the board completely and you get a 1,000-point bonus on top.

Tips for a High Score

  • Build from a corner or an edge and keep the middle open. On a board with an empty centre you will find room even for a 3×3 square or a five-block bar.
  • Think about all three pieces together. Before placing the first one, check where the other two will go; most games end because the last piece has nowhere to fit.
  • Avoid single-square holes. Only a 1×1 piece fits into a cell boxed in on all sides, and it does not come often.
  • Try to complete several lines at once. Clearing two lines in one move is worth 300 points, clearing them separately only 200, and the gap widens with four lines.
  • Look for at least one clear in every tray to keep your streak alive. At ×4, even a single line is worth 400 points.
  • Save powers for a crowded board. Rotate and Refresh help most at the last moment, but charges stop at 5, so spend one when you are at the cap.

Which Skills Does It Exercise?

  • Spatial thinking: Matching a piece's shape to the gaps on the board in your head and seeing whether it fits before you drop it.
  • Planning: Thinking about the order of three pieces and the space left for the next tray at the same time.
  • Risk management: Deciding between filling the board for a big combo and playing it safe.
  • Attention: Keeping track of lines that are almost complete and of single-square gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Block Puzzle free?

Yes. The game is completely free and needs no account. It opens straight in the browser and runs on phone, tablet and computer without any download.

When does the game end?

The game ends when none of the pieces in the tray has room on the board and you have no Rotate or Refresh charges you could use. There is no time limit, so you can think as long as you like.

Can I rotate the pieces?

Not normally. If you have a Rotate charge, press Rotate and tap a piece to turn it 90 degrees. One charge lets you turn that piece as often as you like until it is placed. Symmetric pieces such as 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3 do not rotate and do not use a charge.

How do I earn Rotate and Refresh?

You start with 1 Rotate and 1 Refresh. Every level up gives you 1 Rotate, and every third level also gives 1 Refresh. Both powers stack up to 5 charges.

How do I level up?

The level bar fills with the number of lines you clear. The first levels go quickly: 4 lines for level 2, 5 for level 3 and 6 for level 4. After that each level needs 2 more lines: 8, 10, 12 and so on. Big pieces appear more often as the level rises.

Will I lose an unfinished game?

No. The game is saved in your browser after every move. Close the page, come back later and press Continue to pick up where you left off. Clearing your browser data also deletes the save.

How does my score get on the leaderboard?

Your score is sent automatically when the game ends, when you exit or when you close the page. The leaderboard shows each player's best score, and you can enter your name on the result screen.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. You can drag with the mouse or use the keyboard: 1, 2 and 3 pick a piece, the arrow keys move it, Enter places it, R rotates, Y refreshes, P pauses and M toggles sound.
