The WISC-R is an individually administered intelligence test for children. Its full name is the "Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Revised".
In Turkey, it is widely used for diagnosing giftedness as well as assessing learning disabilities. It is probably the most well-known IQ test you have heard of.

Structure: two sections, twelve subtests
A defining feature of the WISC-R is measuring intelligence under two main headings. This reflects the theoretical framework of the era when it was developed.
Verbal section
Subtests based on language that require spoken answers:
- Information — Questions about cultural and school-acquired knowledge.
- Similarities — Finding common features between two concepts. Measures abstract thinking.
- Arithmetic — Solving spoken math problems without paper or pencil. Also challenges working memory.
- Vocabulary — Defining words. One of the strongest indicators of verbal ability.
- Comprehension — Explaining what to do in everyday social situations.
- Digit Span — Repeating sequences of numbers forward and backward. Direct measurement of working memory.
Performance section
Subtests that do not require language, focusing on practical tasks and arrangement:
- Picture Completion — Spotting the missing essential part in an image.
- Picture Arrangement — Ordering shuffled cards into a meaningful sequence of events.
- Block Design — Recreating visual patterns using colored blocks. A classic measure of visual-spatial reasoning.
- Object Assembly — Assembling puzzle-like pieces into a whole.
- Coding — Quickly matching and drawing symbols. Measures processing speed.
- Mazes — Drawing a path out of a maze.
Some subtests are mandatory, while others are used as alternates.
How scores work
Each subtest's raw score is converted to a standard score based on norm tables for the child's own age group. Three main scores are then generated:
- Verbal IQ
- Performance IQ
- Full Scale IQ
Here is a critical point: practical insights often lie in the gap between Verbal and Performance scores, rather than the overall total. A significant split can indicate learning difficulties or language-based challenges.
Furthermore, scores are always provided with a confidence interval—such as "108, 95% confidence interval 102–114" instead of a flat "108".
WISC-R vs. WISC-IV
This is where parents get confused the most.

The WISC-IV abandoned the Verbal/Performance distinction in favor of four separate indices. This is considered theoretically more accurate because "performance" previously grouped two distinct skills together: visual reasoning and processing speed.
Norm validity: the most vital yet overlooked topic
An IQ test score is calculated relative to the sample group used during norming. The older the norm data, the more systematically scores become inflated.
This is due to the Flynn effect: raw IQ performance rose across generations by about 3 points per decade throughout the 20th century.
The practical consequence: a child tested with outdated norms receives a score a few points higher than they actually earn.
The Turkish standardization of WISC-R dates back to the 1990s, while WISC-IV norms were completed in 2016. This is the primary reason WISC-IV is considered more current and reliable.
This difference matters most around cutoff scores. For a child sitting just above or below a diagnostic threshold or program admission limit, an inflation of a few points can alter the outcome.

Who can administer the test?
These tests cannot be given freely by anyone. Testing must be conducted by certified professionals who have completed specific training.
The reason is not just administrative. Standardized administration requires following precise guidelines, scoring accurately, and building rapport with the child. Improper testing invalidates the results.

How old does my child need to be?
