Does Multitasking Hurt Your Intelligence?

Texting while listening to a meeting, switching between three tabs at once… Modern life praises multitasking as an essential skill. However, research shows the exact opposite: multitasking is rarely an efficient ability. It is mostly an illusion where you only think you are being productive.

Can your brain really do two things at once?

For conscious, high-level tasks like reading, writing, and learning, your brain processes information sequentially, not in parallel. In other words, it cannot focus on two cognitive tasks at the same time; it simply switches between them rapidly. What we call "multitasking" is actually rapid task switching, and every switch comes with a price.

The hidden cost of task switching

With every transition, your brain must close the mental frame of the previous task and open a new one. This requires time and energy. According to research from Stanford University, multitasking can lower productivity by up to 40%. These small switching costs add up throughout the day, resulting in slower work and higher error rates.

Stanford's striking finding

In 2009, Ophir, Nass, and Wagner at Stanford University studied 262 students, comparing heavy "media multitaskers" (people managing multiple screens simultaneously) with light users. Contrary to expectations, heavy multitaskers were worse in all three areas: filtering out irrelevant information, organizing working memory, and surprisingly, switching between tasks. In short, doing constant multitasking did not make people any better at it.

Is it a permanent effect?

Even more concerning is that heavy multitasking habits were linked to ongoing attention problems even when a person was not actively multitasking. They struggled to filter out distractions, had reduced working memory capacity, and found it harder to focus on a single task. This shows that multitasking shapes not just immediate performance, but also your long-term attention habits.

What should you do?

  • Focus on one task: Do not move on to another job until you finish the current one. It sounds simple, but it is the most effective change.
  • Batch similar tasks: Answer all your messages at once instead of constantly interrupting your workflow. This reduces the number of switches.
