Is Intelligence Genetic or Environmental?

"Is intelligence born or made?" This is one of psychology's oldest and most misunderstood debates. The short answer: both, and they are inextricably intertwined. In this article, we look at what twin studies show, what heritability actually means, and why environment should not be underestimated.

What twin studies showed

Studying twins is the strongest way to measure genetic impact. Identical twins share nearly all of their DNA, while fraternal twins share about half. Research consistently shows one result: even identical twins raised apart have more similar IQ scores than fraternal twins raised together. This shows a strong genetic component in intelligence.

What does "heritability" mean?

In adults, the heritability of IQ is estimated to be between 50% and 80%, depending on the sample and method. But there is a common mistake here: heritability does not mean "this percentage of your intelligence comes from genes." It describes how much of the differences within a population stem from genetics. Saying "70% of your intelligence is genetic" for an individual makes no sense.

An interesting finding: heritability increases with age

It might seem counterintuitive, but the influence of genes increases with age. While genetic factors account for about 20% of IQ differences in infancy, this figure rises to 60–80% in adulthood. One reason is that as people grow up, they choose environments that match their inclinations: a curious child seeks out more books, which reinforces their trait.

Why environment cannot be ignored

Even with a strong genetic contribution, a major portion of differences in intelligence (roughly a quarter or more) comes from non-genetic factors: nutrition, education, environmental richness, stress, and more. The most striking proof is the Flynn effect: average IQ scores in developed nations rose over generations, gaining roughly a few points every decade. Since genes cannot change that fast, this rise stems entirely from environment—better nutrition, education, and living conditions.

The right framework: interaction

Modern psychology moves beyond the "genes or environment" dilemma. Cognitive abilities arise from a continuous interaction between genetic predispositions and environmental experiences. A helpful analogy: genes draw a range, and environment determines where you land within that range. No one knows their true potential ceiling; all we know is that reaching for it requires environment, effort, and stimulation.
