For years, an idea was repeated: children in disadvantaged families heard millions fewer words before starting school, and this "word gap" explained later academic failure.
The claim was compelling, making its way into policy documents and public campaigns. Then researchers began questioning it — both methodologically and, more importantly, because it was counting the wrong thing.
Today's perspective is more nuanced and much more useful in practice.
Conversational turns, not word counts
Later research revealed a clear pattern: child development correlates much more strongly with the number of conversational turns directed at and returned by the child than with the total word count they hear.
In other words, ten thousand words coming from a background TV are not the same as fifty back-and-forth exchanges with a child. The second involves far fewer words but does far more work.
Brain imaging studies reported a link between the frequency of conversational turns and activity in language-processing areas — and this link held true regardless of the family's socioeconomic status.
This is a promising finding that points to an actionable variable. Increasing word count is hard; increasing turn-taking can be taught.
Why reciprocity matters so much
Language is not a one-way transfer. A child makes a sound, an adult responds, and the child uses that in their next attempt.
This loop provides three things at once:
- Feedback. The child sees that their sound makes an impact.
- Timing. They learn to take turns, wait, and respond — the basic structure of communication.
- Context. The response relates to what the child is interested in at that moment. Learning is far more effective when interest and words align.

Important note: These ranges are averages. Individual variation is broad, and the normal range is much more flexible than most people think. Being late at a single stage is not meaningful on its own; you need to watch the overall pattern and ongoing progress.
Pointing: a small but critical milestone
Developmental specialists highlight a lesser-known marker: joint attention.
When a child points at something and looks back at you — essentially saying "look at that" — it is more than just a gesture. It shows they realize the other person has a separate mind that can be directed.
This skill is the foundation of language development. A clear absence of pointing and joint attention is a sign that requires monitoring.
Why screens are not enough
A repeated finding in young children: the exact same content is less instructive when presented on a screen than by a live person.
Proposed reasons:
- No reciprocity. The screen does not change based on the child's response. No conversational turns are established.
- No joint attention. The screen does not look where the child is looking or share the same object.
- Weak contextual match. The content does not match what the child is interested in at that moment.
Video calls occupy a middle ground: because reciprocity exists, they can be more effective than one-way content.

What you can do in practice
- Respond, do not lecture. When your child makes a sound, answer back — even if it makes no sense. This builds turn-taking.
- Name what interests them. Focus on what they are looking at, not what you want to show them. Interest and words should meet.
- Expand. When the child says "car", expand with "yes, the red car is going fast." Hearing one step ahead prepares the next step.
- Wait. Wait a few seconds after asking a question. Adults often move on too quickly, leaving no turn for the child.
- Ask open-ended questions. "What color is this?" yields a one-word answer. "What is happening here?" builds a narrative.
- Narrate daily activities. Describing what you do out loud while cooking, shopping, or walking provides rich, contextual input.

- Speak in your native language. The language parents speak fluently provides the richest input. Speaking in a broken second language does not aid language development.
Bilingualism
A common concern: Does speaking two languages delay a child?
Evidence says no. When both languages are counted together, the total vocabulary of bilingual children falls within the typical range. Appearing behind in a single language is due to distribution, not delay.

When to consult a specialist
Signs requiring evaluation:
- No babbling or gestures by 12 months
- No single words by 18 months
- No two-word combinations by age 2
- Loss of previously acquired skills — this is an urgent sign at any age
- Not responding to name, no eye contact
- Absence of pointing and joint attention
- Speech understood only by family and not by strangers after age 3
Early evaluation offers clear advantages over a "wait and see" approach. Hearing screening should be the first step in any suspected language delay.
Frequently asked questions
Does a late talker catch up later?
Some do, some do not, and it is hard to tell which is which in advance. This uncertainty is why evaluation is preferred over waiting.
Do boys talk later?
A small average difference is reported, but this is no reason to normalize a delay. The "he is a boy, he will talk late" mindset can lead to missing genuine delays.
Is language development related to intelligence?
Early language skills correlate with later reading and academic performance. However, language delay alone does not imply low intelligence — as seen in dyslexia, language-specific difficulties can occur alongside normal or high intelligence.
Should I teach baby sign language?
There is no evidence that it delays speech; reports suggest it facilitates communication. Reciprocity remains key — the channel used is secondary.
