Why Your Mind Is Always Full & What to Do

If your mind is racing when you get into bed but you cannot remember what you did all day, you are not alone.

People usually call this "information overload" and advise reading less news. Both miss the point.

The problem is not the amount of information. Humanity has always been surrounded by more stimuli than it could process. What changed is that stimuli became demanding.

Where the difference lies

A library holds one hundred thousand books. Walking past them does not tire you, because none of them ask anything from you.

The hundred notifications on your phone are different. Each demands a decision: look or ignore? Answer now or later? Important or not?

Decisions are more expensive than information. Most of these decisions happen below conscious awareness, but they still drain your resources.

Three mechanisms

1. Open loops

The mind keeps unfinished tasks open. Anything left undone—an unanswered message, an unread article, an unmade decision—consumes resources in the background.

Digital environments are extremely efficient at creating open loops. Checking a notification and saying "I will deal with it later" can be more costly than dealing with it immediately: you pay the interrupt cost and open a new loop at the same time.

2. Attention residue

When you switch from one task to another, part of your attention stays behind. You cannot enter the new task at full capacity.

Someone who switches tasks one hundred times a day may never reach full capacity on any task all day. We discussed this mechanism in our deep work article.

3. Infinite feeds

A newspaper had an end. A book has a final page. Feed-based interfaces have no natural stopping point.

In an activity with no end, you must constantly decide what is "enough." You remake this decision with every scroll, and each time it competes with the pull of the next piece of content.

This design is not accidental. Attention is the revenue source for these systems.

Why consuming information does not produce learning

Someone who consumes dozens of articles, videos, and posts a day may remember none of them by evening. This is not a memory problem.

Learning happens through processing. Reading a text is not the same as processing it. Processing requires pausing to reflect, making connections, questioning, and retrieving information.

A continuous feed eliminates these pauses. One piece of content begins before another ends, leaving no space for processing.

This is why people often complain, "I read a lot, but nothing sticks." Reading is not enough—you need active recall.

Practical steps

The steps below are not a digital detox. Disconnecting completely is neither realistic nor necessary. The goal is to take decision-making control back from the system.

1. Turn off notifications by default

Most notifications cater to the sender's urgency, not your priorities.

Rule: no app can send notifications unless it proves it needs to. Turn off everything except direct human communication and truly time-sensitive alerts.

2. Batch process

Instead of checking emails and messages constantly, check them two or three specific times a day. The total time spent is the same, but the switching cost is far lower.

You may need to set expectations: stating "I usually reply within a few hours" works well in most settings.

3. Reduce inputs, select sources

Count how many information sources you follow. Then ask: which of these changed a decision I made in the past month?

Sources that changed nothing are not news; they are noise. Unsubscribing creates fear of missing out, but in practice, truly important information will reach you anyway.

4. Add friction to feed entry points

Use friction instead of willpower: remove the app from your home screen, log out, or use it through a browser. Every extra step breaks the automatic opening reflex.

Automatic opening is rarely a conscious choice; it is a habit loop. The easiest way to break the loop is to remove the trigger.

5. Close loops

Write down every task that comes to mind on a single list. The list closes open loops: once your mind knows it will not be forgotten, it lets go.

Where the list is does not matter; what matters is that it is the only one. Notes scattered across five different places generate open loops on their own.

6. Leave empty spaces

Do not fill idle moments while waiting in line, taking an elevator, or walking. These are the moments when processing happens.

A mind taking in continuous input gets no time to process it. Boredom is not inefficiency; it is the space required for background processing.

7. Connect consumption to production

Extract one sentence from what you read. Writing forces processing and turns consumption into learning.

The metric is simple: can you explain something you read today to someone else? If you cannot, the content passed through you without staying.

What not to expect

To be honest, these steps will not make you smarter or increase your attention capacity.

What they do is more modest and realistic: they devote a larger share of your existing capacity to what you choose. Capacity stays the same; distribution changes.

Nor should this be framed as a matter of willpower. Fighting an attention-driven economy with sheer willpower is an unfair battle. The approach that works is changing the environment, not forcing willpower.

A broader framework

The information overload discussion is closely tied to cognitive externalization. Keeping information offloaded reduces the memory burden, but it increases the burden of deciding which information matters.
