Question 1
Read the story and answer questions 1-6.
Passage A: The Kite That Would Not Fly
(1) Mina spent all Saturday morning building a kite. She cut the blue paper carefully, tied the sticks together with string, and painted a bright yellow sun in the middle. "This will be the best kite at Harbor Park," she told her little brother, Leo.
(2) At the park, Mina held the kite high and ran as fast as she could. The kite rose a little, spun in a circle, and crashed into the grass. She tried again. This time it dove straight down like a stone.
(3) "Maybe it needs a longer tail," Leo said. He was only five, and he was holding a bag of ribbons from their mother's sewing box.
(4) "You don't know anything about kites," Mina snapped. She tried three more times. Each time, the kite twirled and fell. Her face grew hot, and her arms ached.
(5) Leo sat quietly on a bench and tied the ribbons together, one after another, into a long, colorful rope. He did not say another word.
(6) At last, Mina flopped down beside him. "Fine," she sighed. "Let's try your idea." Leo grinned and handed her the ribbon rope.
(7) Mina tied it to the bottom of the kite and ran once more. This time the kite climbed higher and higher. The long tail kept it steady, and the yellow sun floated above the trees.
(8) "Leo, you were right!" Mina shouted. "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you."
(9) Leo shrugged happily. "Can I hold the string now?"
(10) Mina laughed and put the string in his small hands. Side by side, they watched their kite dance in the wind.
What is the central message of the story?
Correct answer: B
Mina ignores Leo's idea, fails again and again, and succeeds only when she finally tries it and says she is sorry she didn't listen. The story never compares homemade kites with store kites, and Mina does not give up.
-
Question 2
Passage A (see above):
According to paragraph 7, what helps the kite stay up in the air?
Correct answer: D
Paragraph 7 says, "The long tail kept it steady." The painted sun is only decoration, and the story never says that Mina ran faster than before.
-
Question 3
Passage A (see above):
How does Mina most likely feel in paragraph 4?
Correct answer: A
Her kite keeps falling, she speaks unkindly to Leo, and her face grows hot. These clues show she is frustrated. She felt proud in paragraph 1, before the kite started to fail.
-
Question 4
Passage A (see above):
In paragraph 4, what does the word snapped mean?
Correct answer: B
Mina is upset and says something unkind to Leo, so snapped means she spoke sharply and angrily. Snapped can also mean "broke into pieces," but nothing breaks in this paragraph.
-
Question 5
Passage A (see above):
How does paragraph 6 connect to paragraph 3?
Correct answer: A
In paragraph 3, Leo suggests a longer tail, and in paragraph 6, Mina says, "Let's try your idea." Leo never leaves the park; he stays on the bench making the tail.
-
Question 6
Passage A (see above):
Which sentence from the story best shows that Mina has learned a lesson?
Correct answer: C
Mina apologizes and admits she should have listened, which shows she learned from her mistake. She says Leo doesn't know anything about kites before she has learned that lesson.
-
Question 7
Which word correctly completes the sentence?
Three ____ waddled across the farm road.
Correct answer: C
Goose has an irregular plural: one goose, two geese. Adding -s or -es does not work for this word.
-
Question 8
Which word correctly completes the sentence?
Yesterday, Carlos ____ a thank-you note to his aunt.
Correct answer: D
Yesterday tells us the action happened in the past, and the past tense of write is wrote. Written needs a helping verb such as has or had, and writed is not a word.
-
Question 9
Which word correctly completes the sentence?
Of the three puppies in the basket, Biscuit is the ____ one.
Correct answer: A
When you compare three or more things, use the -est form: smallest. Smaller compares only two things, and most smallest uses two superlative forms at once.
-
Question 10
Which sentence is written correctly?
Correct answer: C
A comma goes between the name of a city and its state: Austin, Texas. Commas do not go before or after the word in.
-
Question 11
Which sentence uses quotation marks correctly?
Correct answer: B
Quotation marks go around only the words Ben says, and the question mark stays inside them because it is part of his question. The words asked Ben are not spoken, so they belong outside the quotation marks.
-
Question 12
Mr. Patel asked the class to reread the directions.
What does reread mean?
Correct answer: D
The prefix re- means "again," so reread means "read again." The prefix pre- means "before," mis- means "wrongly," and un- means "not."
Questions you leave blank are not counted as wrong.
