Question 1
A grocery store sells an 18-ounce box of cereal for $4.86 and a 24-ounce box of the same cereal for $6.24. Which box has the lower price per ounce, and by how much?
Correct answer: B
$4.86 ÷ 18 = $0.27 per ounce and $6.24 ÷ 24 = $0.26 per ounce, so the larger box is cheaper by one cent per ounce. Comparing only the total prices makes the smaller box look like the better deal.

Question 2
A concrete mix uses cement, sand and gravel in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3 by volume. A worker uses 9 cubic feet of sand. How many cubic feet of gravel should the worker use?
Correct answer: C
Sand is 2 parts, so one part is 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5 cubic feet, and gravel is 3 parts: 3 × 4.5 = 13.5 cubic feet. The value 27 is the total volume of all six parts, and 4.5 is the amount of cement.

Question 3
Lena deposits $2,400 in an account that pays 3.5% simple interest per year. She makes no other deposits or withdrawals. How much interest will the account earn in 4 years? (Simple interest: I = Prt)
Correct answer: A
I = 2,400 × 0.035 × 4 = $336. The amount $84 is only one year of interest, and $2,736 is the balance after 4 years (principal plus interest), not the interest itself.
-
Question 4
The price of a pair of work boots drops from $80 to $68. By what percent did the price decrease?
Correct answer: D
The decrease is $80 − $68 = $12, and percent change is measured from the original price: 12 ÷ 80 = 0.15 = 15%. Dividing by the new price gives 12 ÷ 68 ≈ 17.6%, and 85% is the new price as a percent of the old one.
-
Question 5
After a 20% discount, a lamp sells for $56. What was the original price of the lamp?
Correct answer: B
The sale price is 80% of the original, so the original is $56 ÷ 0.80 = $70. Adding 20% of $56 gives $67.20, which is wrong because the discount was 20% of the original price, not of the sale price.
-
Question 6
A salesperson earns a 4% commission on her sales. Last month her commission was $1,380. What was the total value of her sales last month?
Correct answer: A
Commission = 0.04 × sales, so sales = $1,380 ÷ 0.04 = $34,500. The value $5,520 comes from multiplying 1,380 by 4 instead of dividing by 0.04.
-
Question 7
A printer prints 18 pages in 45 seconds. At this rate, how many pages can it print in 6 minutes?
Correct answer: C
6 minutes is 360 seconds, which is 360 ÷ 45 = 8 groups of 45 seconds, so the printer makes 8 × 18 = 144 pages. Multiplying 18 by 6 gives 108, but that treats 45 seconds as if it were one minute.
-
Question 8
On a floor plan, 14 inch represents 1 foot. A rectangular room measures 3.5 inches by 4.25 inches on the plan. What is the actual area of the room, in square feet?
Correct answer: D
Each inch on the plan is 4 feet, so the room is 3.5 × 4 = 14 feet by 4.25 × 4 = 17 feet, and its area is 14 × 17 = 238 square feet. Multiplying the plan area by 4 only once gives 59.5, and 62 is the perimeter in feet.
-
Question 9
A circular flower garden has a diameter of 14 feet. A gardener wants to put edging around the entire outside of the garden. Using 3.14 for π, how many feet of edging are needed?
Correct answer: A
Edging goes around the circle, so you need the circumference: C = πd = 3.14 × 14 = 43.96 feet. The value 153.86 is the area (π × 7²), and 21.98 uses the radius in place of the diameter in C = πd.
-
Question 10
A patio has the shape of a 20-foot by 12-foot rectangle with a 6-foot by 4-foot rectangle removed from one corner. What is the area of the patio, in square feet?
Correct answer: B
Subtract the missing corner from the full rectangle: 20 × 12 − 6 × 4 = 240 − 24 = 216 square feet. Adding the corner instead gives 264, and 64 is the perimeter, which does not change when a corner is cut out this way.
-
Question 11
An aquarium is a rectangular prism 30 inches long, 12 inches wide and 16 inches high. One gallon is 231 cubic inches. About how many gallons of water does the aquarium hold when it is full?
Correct answer: C
The volume is 30 × 12 × 16 = 5,760 cubic inches, and 5,760 ÷ 231 ≈ 24.9, or about 25 gallons. An answer of 250 would require ten times the volume, so it comes from a misplaced decimal point.
-
Question 12
A pile of sand is shaped like a cone with a radius of 3 meters and a height of 2 meters. To the nearest tenth of a cubic meter, what is the volume of the pile? (Cone: V = 13πr2h)
Correct answer: D
V = 13 × π × 32 × 2 = 6π ≈ 18.8 cubic meters. Leaving out the 13 gives 56.5 (the volume of a cylinder), and using the diameter 6 as the radius gives 75.4.
-
Question 13
A closed wooden box is 10 inches long, 8 inches wide and 5 inches high. A student will paint every outside face of the box. What is the total area to be painted, in square inches?
Correct answer: A
Surface area = 2(10 × 8 + 10 × 5 + 8 × 5) = 2(80 + 50 + 40) = 340 square inches. The value 400 is the volume, 170 counts each pair of faces only once, and 260 leaves out the top.
-
Question 14
A rectangular park is 240 meters long and 100 meters wide. Mateo usually walks from one corner to the opposite corner along two sides of the park. How many meters shorter is the walk if he goes straight across the park diagonally instead?
Correct answer: B
The diagonal is √(240² + 100²) = √67,600 = 260 meters, and the walk along two sides is 240 + 100 = 340 meters, so the diagonal saves 340 − 260 = 80 meters. The value 260 is the length of the diagonal itself, not the savings.
-
Question 15
A 4-inch by 6-inch photo is enlarged so that its shorter side becomes 10 inches long. The enlargement keeps the same shape. How long is the longer side of the enlarged photo?
Correct answer: C
The short side grows by a factor of 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5, so the long side becomes 6 × 2.5 = 15 inches. Adding the same 6 inches to each side gives 12, which changes the shape of the photo.
