These 15 questions cover the number and quantity, statistics and probability topics of the ACT Math test: exponents, complex numbers, matrices, averages, spread, counting and probability. For probability questions, first decide what the whole group is, then count the outcomes you want inside it.

Question 1
Five test scores are 70, 75, 80, 85 and 90. A sixth score of 140 is added to the list. After the sixth score is added, by how many points does the mean of the six scores exceed their median?
Correct answer: D
The new mean is (400 + 140) ÷ 6 = 90, and the new median is the average of 80 and 85, which is 82.5, so the difference is 7.5. The value 10 is how much the mean rose (from 80 to 90), not the gap between mean and median.

Question 2
In a course, tests count for 50% of the final grade, homework for 30% and the final exam for 20%. Dana's test average is 82, her homework average is 95 and her final exam score is 70. What is Dana's final grade?
Correct answer: B
Weighted average: 0.5(82) + 0.3(95) + 0.2(70) = 41 + 28.5 + 14 = 83.5. Averaging the three scores equally gives about 82.3, which ignores the weights.

Question 3
Two fair six-sided dice, each numbered 1 through 6, are rolled. What is the probability that the sum of the two numbers is 8?
Correct answer: A
There are 36 equally likely ordered outcomes, and 5 of them give a sum of 8: (2, 6), (3, 5), (4, 4), (5, 3), (6, 2). The fraction 211 treats the 11 possible sums as equally likely, which they are not.

Question 4
A bag contains 5 red marbles and 3 green marbles. Two marbles are drawn at random, one after the other, without replacement. What is the probability that both marbles are red?
Correct answer: C
The first draw is red with probability 58; then 4 of the remaining 7 marbles are red, so the probability is 58 × 47 = 2056 = 514. The value 2564 would be correct only if the first marble were put back.
-
Question 5
A club has 8 members. How many different 3-person committees can be chosen from the members if the order of selection does not matter?
Correct answer: B
This is a combination: 8C3 = (8 × 7 × 6) ÷ (3 × 2 × 1) = 56. The value 336 counts ordered selections, so it counts each committee 6 times.
-
Question 6
A carnival spinner has 4 equal sections labeled $0, $2, $5 and $9. A player spins once and wins the amount shown. What is the expected value of the amount won on one spin?
Correct answer: D
Each section has probability 14, so the expected value is (0 + 2 + 5 + 9) ÷ 4 = $4.00. The value $5.33 leaves out the $0 section, and $3.50 is the median of the four amounts, not the mean.
-
Question 7
For i = √−1, what is the value of i23?
Correct answer: A
Powers of i repeat every 4 (i, −1, −i, 1). Since 23 = 4 × 5 + 3, i23 = i3 = −i. The answer −1 would be correct for a remainder of 2, not 3.
-
Question 8
Which of the following is equal to (6 × 105)(4 × 10−2)?
Correct answer: C
Multiply the numbers and add the exponents: 6 × 4 = 24 and 105 + (−2) = 103, so the product is 24 × 103 = 2.4 × 104. The choice 2.4 × 103 forgets to raise the exponent by 1 when 24 is rewritten as 2.4 × 10.
-
Question 9
What is the value of 2723?
Correct answer: B
Take the cube root first, then square: ∛27 = 3 and 32 = 9. Multiplying 27 by 23 gives 18, which treats the exponent as a factor.
-
Question 10
Bus Route A leaves the station every 12 minutes, and Bus Route B leaves every 18 minutes. Both routes leave the station together at 8:00 a.m. At what time will they next leave the station together?
Correct answer: D
The buses leave together again after the least common multiple of 12 and 18, which is 36 minutes, so at 8:36 a.m. Multiplying 12 × 18 = 216 minutes gives a common multiple, but not the least one (11:36 a.m.).

Question 11
The determinant of a 2 × 2 matrix with first row a, b and second row c, d is ad − bc. What is the determinant of the 2 × 2 matrix with first row 3, 2 and second row 5, 4?
Correct answer: A
ad − bc = 3 × 4 − 2 × 5 = 12 − 10 = 2. Adding the products instead of subtracting gives 22, and reversing the subtraction (10 − 12) gives −2.
-
Question 12
Which of the following data sets has the greatest standard deviation?
Correct answer: C
Standard deviation measures how far the values lie from the mean. All four sets have a mean of 10, and the values 2, 6, 14, 18 lie farthest from it (4 to 8 units away), so this set has the greatest spread. The set of four 10s has a standard deviation of 0.

Question 13
The table shows the results of a survey of 120 students.
Plays an instrument Does not play Total Grade 9 18 42 60 Grade 10 27 33 60 Total 45 75 120 A student who plays an instrument is chosen at random. What is the probability that the student is in Grade 10?
Correct answer: B
The choice is made only among the 45 students who play an instrument, and 27 of them are in Grade 10: 2745 = 35. The fraction 920 = 2760 divides by all Grade 10 students instead.

Question 14
A factory finds that 10% of the light bulbs it makes are defective. Two bulbs are chosen at random, and whether one is defective does not affect the other. What is the probability that at least one of the two bulbs is defective?
Correct answer: C
The probability that neither bulb is defective is 0.9 × 0.9 = 0.81, so the probability of at least one defective bulb is 1 − 0.81 = 0.19. Adding 0.1 + 0.1 = 0.20 counts the case where both are defective twice.

Question 15
A state's license plates have 2 letters followed by 3 digits. Any of the 26 letters and any of the 10 digits may be used in each position, and repeats are allowed. How many different license plates are possible?
Correct answer: A
By the counting principle, there are 26 × 26 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 676,000 plates. The value 468,000 = 26 × 25 × 10 × 9 × 8 would be correct only if repeats were not allowed.
