Aphantasia: Life Without a Mind's Eye

Try a small experiment. Close your eyes and think of an apple.

Now ask yourself: Did you see the apple? Did it have color? Was it 3D, and could you rotate it? Or did you just think of the concept of an "apple"—knowing what it is without seeing an image?

Answers to this question vary far more than most people expect. On one end are people who generate images with photographic clarity. On the other end are those who see nothing at all.

This second group has aphantasia, and most of them do not realize it until adulthood.

A late discovery

Although the lack of mental imagery was noted in the 19th century, the phenomenon was not systematically studied for a long time. The term "aphantasia" was introduced in 2015 by a neurology team following a patient who lost his mental visualization ability after brain surgery.

After the case was published, something unexpected happened: many people wrote to the researchers reporting that they had been this way from birth. It was not a rare neurological injury, but a natural variation present in a segment of the population from the start.

Prevalence estimates vary across studies, but usually hover around a few percent.

The most surprising part: going unnoticed

Most people with aphantasia learn about their condition through news articles or social media posts. For some, this realization comes as a shock at age forty.

The reason is clear. We all use the phrase "picture it in your mind," and everyone assumes it is figurative. Someone with aphantasia may have interpreted this phrase their entire life as simply "think about it." Nobody ever asks them, "Do you actually see a visual image?"

This is a striking example of how private and incomparable mental experiences are. We assume our inner experience is identical to everyone else's, and there is no easy way to test that assumption.

How it is verified: beyond self-report

At this point, a reasonable doubt arises: do people who claim to have aphantasia actually experience the same thing as everyone else, but just describe it differently?

Researchers took this question seriously and developed methods independent of self-reports. Two are particularly convincing:

Pupillary response

Your pupils shrink when you look at something bright. What is fascinating is that they also shrink slightly when you imagine something bright. In other words, a mental image produces a physiological reaction similar to actual perception.

Participants with aphantasia do not show this reaction. This is an involuntary indicator independent of self-reporting.

Binocular rivalry

When different images are presented to each eye simultaneously, perception alternates between them. Normally, imagining one of the images before the test increases the chance that it will dominate perception—imagery primes perception.

In people with aphantasia, this priming effect does not occur.

Together, these two findings support that aphantasia is not a difference in phrasing, but a real functional difference.

What is missing and what is not

A common misconception is that people with aphantasia lack an imagination. That is not the case.

The last row is particularly interesting: many people with aphantasia report experiencing visual imagery in their dreams. This means the system is not broken; there is simply no voluntary access.

An author with aphantasia can write a novel. They do not see the scene, but they know what happens, how characters feel, and how to describe the setting. Conceptual knowledge is fully intact without the sensory experience.

Impact on memory

One of the most consistent findings linked to aphantasia is a less vivid autobiographical memory.

When recalling a past event, most people re-experience the scene to some degree: the place, light, faces. Someone with aphantasia knows what happened, but does not relive it. The memory feels like a summary rather than a movie.

This may have an interesting side effect: vivid visual re-experiencing is the part of memory most vulnerable to distortion. As scenes are reconstructed, details get added. A memory without visual reconstruction might be more resistant to certain types of distortion—an intriguing hypothesis that needs further testing. The other extreme: hyperphantasia

At the opposite end of the spectrum are people who experience mental images with a clarity close to real perception.

While this might seem like an advantage, the reality is nuanced. Very vivid involuntary imagery can turn into a disadvantage when reliving traumatic memories.

Thus, imagery vividness is not a scale of ability, but an axis of variation. Both ends come with their own advantages and costs.

Relation to intelligence and performance

Aphantasia is not classified as a disorder, and no meaningful link to overall cognitive performance has been reported. People with aphantasia work in every field and at every achievement level.

Some survey-based studies suggest it might be relatively more common in technical and mathematical fields, but these findings await replication and may reflect self-selection effects.

Practical implications

For learning

Memory techniques relying on visual imagery—such as the memory palace—may not work as expected for people with aphantasia. Meaning-based and verbal strategies can be more effective. Consider the techniques in our memory techniques article within this context.

The instruction "picture this in your mind" is impossible for some students in a classroom. Knowing this helps prevent those students from feeling inadequate.

On a personal level

Discovering you have aphantasia can create a sense of loss for some. But remember: nothing has changed. You are still the same person living with the same abilities—you simply learned that your inner experience differs from others.

Can aphantasia be cured?

It is not defined as a disease, so there is no treatment framework. There is no reliable evidence that imagery exercises work.

How do I know if I have it?

There are widely used self-report questionnaires, but a simple test is this: can you visualize the face of someone you know and tell their eye color by "looking" at it, or do you simply know the answer?

Can auditory imagery be missing too?

Yes. Some people cannot hear an inner voice or music in their mind either. This can vary independently across different sensory modalities.

Does this affect my intelligence?
