  1. Frage 1

    Text 1: Cooler Cities

    (1) On a summer afternoon, the centre of a large city can be several degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside. Asphalt and concrete absorb sunlight during the day and release it slowly at night, so the streets never really cool down. Planners call this the urban heat island effect.

    (2) Some cities have responded with ambitious tree-planting schemes, while others paint roofs white or replace car parks with small parks. Critics point out that trees take decades to reach their full size and need water during the very droughts they are meant to soften.

    (3) Yet doing nothing is hardly a cheaper option. Heatwaves strain hospitals, slow down workers and drive up the demand for air conditioning, which in turn pumps even more warm air into the streets. Seen this way, a shady street is not a luxury but a piece of public health infrastructure.
